A former law clerk for Chip Robertson when he served on the Missouri Supreme Court, Mary Winter's roots with Bartimus Frickleton Robertson Rader run deep.
Based in our Jefferson City office, Mary is the former general counsel for the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and the Missouri Department of Economic Development. She is well-connected at every level of state government.
Mary was part of the Bartimus Frickleton Robertson Rader team that negotiated one of the largest consumer class action settlements in U.S. history - achieving nearly $1 billion in refunds for AT&T wireless customers inappropriately charged sales or internet access taxes.
Mary thrives on righting wrongs and has great empathy for her clients. "I believe the legal profession provides the most diverse opportunities to do the most good for the most people," she says.
Mary works on cases involving complex litigation, pharmaceutical litigation and class actions. She believes that class actions are the means by which big wrongs can be righted and are how corporations can be exposed as having profited at the expense of their customers. "Plaintiffs' firms want to solve problems," she states, “not drag them out.”
Mary works to find solutions that get clients as close as possible to being whole again and believes deeply in justice over profit. "Clients come to us because something has gone terribly wrong", she explains. "We protect them and fight for them the very best we can, as honorably as we can. This is how we practice law."
Mary Winter’s personal motto is “care for the needs of others, and your needs will be cared for.”
She embodies this belief in her legal practice – helping thousands of plaintiffs receive compensation through class action or appeal – and in her everyday life.
Among her many community service roles:
- Mary is board chair for Cole County CASA, which trains court-appointed volunteer advocates to represent children placed in the foster care system;
- She is co-founder of Dreams to Reality, which helps low-income women overcome employment obstacles;
- She serves on the board of the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri, which last year distributed over 28 million pounds of food and household products in 32 county service areas; and
- She serves on the advisory board for The HALO Foundation, which provides shelter and support services to homeless children.
Mary also loves travel (she’s been to almost every continent) and photography (she says she’d be a photojournalist if she weren't a lawyer).
One of her favorite life experiences occurred on a mission trip with a local church in the mid-‘90s to assist with the refugee crisis from the genocide in Rwanda. Mary and others worked alongside refugees to construct a multipurpose building. At the end of the trip, the group went to one of the refugee camps to say goodbye to one particular young man they had become close to. He was so proud they’d come to visit him that he gave Mary one of his only personal possessions – a handmade trowel he’d used on the construction project. A simple gift from a man who had nothing is one of her prized treasures and is a life lesson she won’t forget.
Coming from a small town herself (St. Elizabeth, Missouri), Mary understands hard work and accountability. “My parents were part of the Greatest Generation and always sought to make themselves and their community better,” she says. “I learned early on that doing less than your best in anything was unacceptable.”
